This picture screams: I took my Grandma’s style and vintage flair but left her generational curses at the door. • 🗣In the last two years, I’ve experienced how a continual spread of matriarchal lies and the manipulation of facts seep in and diseased myself and the generations after me. Through tears and withdrawal I realized the choice is mine if I continued to live and be affected by her decades of dishonesty, a West Indian staple of her generation. Though my story is intertwined with hers, I am not her. 🗣For World Mental Health Day, I took an intentional beat and gained the strength to release the weight of her trauma and to step out from behind her. With each piece of clothing we revamp, resell or buy secondhand we are creating a collaborative story, a woven memory quilt or like a very long game of telephone 🤣 where the garment is bound to be different by the tail end but we’ll never forget the memories it gave us. When we are share and are reminded of those stories, we will think twice before discarding.
